Video of bats at Dore Abbey.

The scene, filmed in infra-red is in the chancel atticwatching the dedicated bat entrance after sunset. The lesser horseshoe bats (LHS) are flying up to and back down from the exit checking the light levels (light sampling behaviour) and hanging from the rim. These are very pregnant (thus very large) females.

The warbling sound is their echolocation call heard through a bat detector, so shifted from 120kHz to our hearing levels.

You can also hear a rat-a-tat-tat-tat sound like stubble burning, this is the call of the Natterers bats behind the camera, also a maternity roost.

Total approx 170-180 Lesser Horseshoe, and at least 6 Natterers.

Largest number of LHS recorded here to date, a very important site.

Graffiti Gallery - Tower Roof

A dozen of the many additions to the tower roof created by cheeky visitors over the years. Can you identify any of them? We’d love to hear from you if you can.
